THE AFA STORY Marvin E. Klein, MD, Founder/Inventor Dr. Klein, a board certified dermatologist, created and developed AFAs. As the recipient of the National American Dermatology Association Research Award and member of Galen’s Honorary Medical Society, Dr. Marvin E. Klein gained international recognition for his proprietary formulations, including an esterified glycolic acid (AHA) and a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) masque. The company he created to distribute these products, Glyderm, has since been sold to an international pharmaceutical company and the products continue to be successfully distributed worldwide. Dr. Klein, an avid researcher with a passion for biochemistry, continued his research in search of a formula that provided significant anti-aging benefits while simultaneously eliminating the dryness and irritation commonly associated with other commercially available products. There are certain amino acids that are present in the epidermis of the human skin and are recognized as part of the Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) of the skin. These amino acids accumulate in the epidermis of the skin where they function to help prevent water loss from the skin, which is a vital factor in keeping the skin appearing healthy and youthful. Dr. Klein had discovered a way to treat, or further acidify, these same amino acids and created the cosmeceutical compounds that were to become AFAs (Amino acid Filaggrin-based Anitoxidants). Dr. Klein formulated these AFAs into in-office peels and home care products. Over the next three, years Dr. Klein’s new AFA products were tested by board certified dermatologists. After three years, his AFA formulations were patented (US Patent # 6,197,317 and # 6,703,030, with other patents still pending). He then established exCel Cosmeceuticals Inc., to distribute the AFA peels and products. AFAs are highly stable, highly potent antioxidants yet extremely gentle.
